What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as "caps," are custom-made restorations that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crowns are used to strengthen and protect teeth that have been weakened by decay, fractures, or other damage. They can also be used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.

Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials. At Lynchburg Dentist, we offer high-quality porcelain crowns that are designed to match the natural color and appearance of your teeth.

When Are Dental Crowns Recommended?

Dental crowns may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Restoring a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay or trauma

  • Protecting a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment

  • Strengthening a tooth that is cracked or fractured

  • Improving the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth

  • Anchoring a dental bridge

  • Covering a dental implant

The Dental Crown Process

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to our office:

  1. During the first visit, our dentist will examine your tooth and determine if a crown is the best option for you. If a crown is recommended, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown. Impressions of your tooth will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where your custom crown will be fabricated. A temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth while the permanent crown is being made.

  2. At the second visit, the temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent crown will be carefully fitted and cemented into place. Our dentist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, as well as visiting our office for routine check-ups and cleanings. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can also help prevent damage to your crown.
